Satellite Greenness Suggests Corn Belt Crops
are off to a Very Good Start, But Weather Concerns are Mounting Elsewhere
Normalized Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI)
Period 23, May 20 – June 3, 2024
- Conditions in Corn Belt States are looking very good with abundant soil moisture reserves. Consistently cooler temperatures, however, are keeping early crop development lagging.
- Eastern Texas and the Lower Mississippi Valley have seen excessive rain events this season. With the promise of more wet weather in the offing, replanting is not off the table.
- Wheat areas across the Western High Plains are starved for moisture. Severe storms with strong winds and large hail have pummeled the region.
- California and the West have benefited from the lack of sustained heat so far this season, but that will soon change with temperatures expected to soar well into the 90s and above in parts.
