TerraMetrics Ag’s Winter Wheat Yield Forecast Update
Third Round of Satellite-Based Crop Assessments Just Released
LAWRENCE, KS: April 25, 2025 — Widespread precipitation across the Southern Great Plains over the last two weeks came at a great time for a rapidly growing winter wheat crop that is entering reproduction. Unfortunately, as is frequently the case this time of year, severe storms served as the source of this moisture, causing major flooding from north-central Texas up through central and eastern Oklahoma and into southeastern Kansas and southwestern Missouri. Multiple reports of high wind, hail, and tornadoes accompanied these storms, with Oklahoma particularly hard-hit. Severe hail damage to the winter wheat crop can impact satellite greenness values, which is something for local interests to keep an eye on.
These observations about the US winter wheat crop are from the third of eight satellite NDVI GreenReport® Winter Wheat Yield Forecasts for 2025 published by TerraMetrics Agriculture, Inc., a collaborative project with Kansas Applied Remote Sensing (KARS) at the University of Kansas. TMAI’s US winter wheat yield estimate of 52.2 bushels per acre is slightly above trend yield of 51.3 bu/ac. For perspective, the current record US yield is 55.3 bu/ac achieved in 2016.
